Aileen and Helen

David and I first met at College in the early 1960's, and were together for 2 years. When we left we returned to our home towns to teach, an eventually lost touch. Fifty years later,I knew that we'd had the major part of our lifespans, and was interested to know how his had gone. I located him in Ascot, and after communicating for a while we agreed to meet for lunch. Recognising each other could have been a problem, so we sent photos. We both cheated. They were at least 10yrs old! I told David the truth, I looked OK from a distance, and my daughter had Down's syndrome. Imagine my surprise to find that he'd chosen to work with disabled children, which was in itself evidence of his caring nature. We've spent the last 7yrs travelling to meet up, using my home in Manchester for easy access to events at Liverpool Cathedral and other things/friends "up north." I'd been on my own with Helen for 15yrs and to have his experienced support was a revelation as he could communicate better with her than I could. During the last few months his texts and calls were the highlights of my days, and to be with David as a couple was joyous. I often sat in his kitchen thinking that this must be a dream. He was our future, and his loss has created a huge chasm in both our lives.
